The Golden Hour: Timing Your Wedding Photos for Stunning Results

Understanding the Golden Hour

The “golden hour” is a mesmerizing time just before sunset when the light transforms into a soft, ethereal glow, bathing everything it touches in a warm, golden hue.

This natural illumination is the pinnacle of a photographer’s palette, crafting captivating visuals with gentle shadows and flattering tones.

For engagement sessions or wedding photography, in Florida, capturing images during the golden hour can elevate the romance and allure of the couple's special day, yielding breathtaking and unforgettable photos. This time frame is very popular and is often booked months in advance.

What the Golden Hour is NOT

  • It is not the sunset or sunset time. Most online clock features will tell you when the sun actually sets. This is a time of when the darkness starts.
  • It has a different look on the beach, in the city, and in the woods.
  • It can create sunspots in your photography (usually super pretty!) so make sure you like the look of that for your finished prints.
  • It is unstoppable --so plan on meeting with your photographer early enough.
  • It is not in the morning. That is the Blue Hour. The light is cooler & soft, but nothing like the colors of the Golden Hour itself.

Working with Your Wedding Planner & All Vendors

Seamlessly timing your wedding photos to align with the golden hour necessitates meticulous planning and coordination. Here are some luxurious tips to ensure your timeline aligns flawlessly:

  1. Communicate with Your Photographer: Engage in an early dialogue with your photographer about your desire to encapsulate golden hour photos. Their expertise is a treasure trove in pinpointing the ideal times for your specific location and season. Our studio can advise you of the absolute best time to shoot, based on your venue location (in the woods, in the city, or on the beach); as we know the adjustments that have to be made.
  2. Coordinate with Your Wedding Planner: Your planner can weave golden hour photography into the fabric of your wedding day schedule. This might entail elegantly adjusting the timing of your ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner services, or event the start of the reception to allow for an exclusive photo session during this optimal lighting period. Yes, you may have to leave your guests & dinner plate to capture these fleeting moments!
  3. Involve Other Vendors: Ensure your caterer, florist, and other vendors are attuned to the timeline to prevent any disruptions. They may need to adjust their schedules to harmonize with the timing of events. Don't assume that all vendors will be taking part in your Golden Hour session without prior notice by you.
  4. Be Flexible: Nature’s whims can be unpredictable, so a flexible attitude is paramount. Weather conditions or unforeseen delays might necessitate adjustments to your plan. Trust in your photographer's seasoned eye to make the most of the available light. Plus, your venue may have restrictions (no windows, fences, trees, blocked balconies, etc.). So it is always best to plan ahead. Especially since this session could be up to 35 minutes to 1hour.

Golden Hour Photography Sessions here on Florida Beaches

Florida’s beaches present a sublime backdrop for golden hour photography, but it’s essential to consider the environmental nuances. During these hours, temperatures often begin to recede, offering a more comfortable ambiance compared to the midday heat. However, humidity can still play a role, particularly in the summer months. Be prepared with light, breathable attire and consider providing guests with sumptuous refreshments to keep everyone at ease during the photo session.

By meticulously planning around the golden hour, you can capture exquisite, romantic photos that beautifully encapsulate the essence of your special day. These images will be cherished memories, capturing the love and joy shared on your wedding day in the most flattering light Mother Nature can bestow.
